Happy Birthday Richard

Tom and I wish you a Very Happy Birthday, and a lucky decade, too! We miss you, and hope you will get to Northern Michigan again for the sunset toasts with the MSU gang or blizzard ski outings. The sunfish really needs a good run ( and cleaning, too!) Hugs and sip champagne for us! Tom and Mary

Hey, Richard!

Richard,

We miss you in East Lansing! No more than a week goes by without somebody mentioning your name...Deepa or Les or Neera or Diane or John or Murari or Sandra...always somebody...and always with a smile. We look forward to having you back here for a bit of time this Fall.

Things are a bit tough these days; the Michigan economy isn't doing very well. It's the inevitable shake out time (happens to people and societies). This is just our time...but it's tough.

I've only played golf twice this Summer--on back to back days in New York--and that has been it for me. Being away on international travels for all of June played havoc on my Summer schedule. I miss the times we spent together on the links; it was great fun on the course and, always, at the pub after our matches.

I haven't seen Tom and Mary since last year, when you were last here.

Let me offer you the very best of wishes on this wonderful time: to be with family and to enjoy reaching a hallmark in life.

With great apprecation, love, and admiration, I am your friend, Frank

Happy 70th Richard

Dear Richard,

Happy 70th Birthday, old man. Did I say 'old man'? I can't even remember my 70th and no, it's not Alzheimers. It's because the last 12 years have been so good. The best is yet to come, Richard.

But, word of advice, use every piece of condescension you get. Take the seat they offer. And the lift in the car. And the special piece of cake. And the travel concessions, etc. People are wonderful. Now they will spring to attention when you get on public transport and fight for you to take their seat. Little do they know that you could probably run alongside the bus.

I look back on many good times we have spent together (each of course in our own epistemologies!!), from the pig farm at Hawkesbury to the talks at TEC, the happy meals and music hours, the special family events like Fiona's wedding and Luca's first birthday, catching up in London and the unique privilege of being introduced to Cawsand and the family farm in Cornwall.

Helen and I both value your friendship and look forward to future activities, particularly, I may say, to our golf game around Christmas.

Very best wishes for many good times ahead.

Phil and Helen

A clarion for the agrarian septuagenarian

Dear Richard,

Can it really be true? Can it be that you have reached the ripe old age of 70?! This is what happens to agrarian seminarian, septuagenarians. Of course, then, it is far better than being an unredeemed utilitarian! Or worse, a barbarian! Or an authoritarian disciplinarian!

Worse: It is the FACT OF THE MATTER than you are a septuagenarian! There is no escaping it. Ontologically speaking, it has happened, and as the bard once said, that which has been dooed cannot be undooed. (Or something like that.)

Of course, I expect that I will be producing another of these sectarian posts when you become an octogenarian, and then again when you become a nonagenarian. Etc. That is what happens to old friends, even those who remain sexagenarians!

So as I sit here, now Lancastrated, thinking of the ex-Cornwallish Australian ex-parasitologist who somehow cross paths with me, I cannot help asking the question: How does an ex-Cornwallish Australian ex-parasitologist KNOW that he is a good friend of a Lansinger Lancastrated model of a modern sociologist?

All the best, on your birthday, and all that.

Larry

PS I will be sending (COD) a CD with me singing a Gilbert and Sullivan song with my lyrics added. Feel free to refuse it.

Happy Birthday Old Mate
Claudia and I wish you all the best for your 70th. You have been and continue to be the most marvellous father, and father-in-law.

Many thanks for all your support and patience over the years and my apologies for causing the premature male pattern balding but I think you look better without hair.

We are looking forward to spending more time with you in your semi-retirement (if that ever happens) and once my back is better I hope to regain the family golfing trophy.

Hopefully we can soon add to the family and brood and produce some Bawden's to perpetuate your legacy.

All the very best.
Claudia and Marcus
